Support students’ understanding of your course pedagogy Service Learning is a tool used to support students’ understanding of your course pedagogy through a combination of experiential and active learning taking place through service in the community. When service learning is implemented effectively, students are able to connect the relevance of course concepts and where they exist in the community space they are serving. Likewise, students are able to take what they are observing in a community space and apply that knowledge and skill to what they are learning in the classroom. Reflection is a key part of where students will make not only these connections but have the opportunity to cultivate their critical thinking skills and their own value system in regards to community issues. Am I able to crossover and use hours served for credit in both/all of my courses? A: That will depend on the faculty members teaching your courses, so be sure to check with your instructors about counting hours served toward both courses. Some will be fine with it, as long as your service meets the learning outcomes of both classes. Q: I don’t have a car. How will I get to my service site? A: Most faculty are willing to work with students on how to adjust your service learning project/placement to meet your transportation needs. Q: How will I track my hours? A: Each professor has a different approach to suit the structure of the course. Follow their policy, as it will either culminate in having your professor report your hours to the center or you will enter your hours here WHAT IS SERVICE LEARNING?
